Who We Are

The Harold B. Gill Foundation is dedicated to preserving and protecting the scholarship and creative output of Harold B. Gill, Jr. (1933-2024) - Historian of Colonial Virginia who focused over seventy years of investigative research on the tradesmen, merchants, and farmers of the 18th Century.

Harold B. Gill, Jr.

For over 60 years, Harold B. Gill, Jr. researched 18th Century Virginia. Beginning in the mid 1950s as an archivist in the Virginia State Library, he became a Research Assistant for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation in December 1961. Over the course of the next 54 years, he would author a number of books and edit others wrapping up his long career as the consulting editor of the Colonial Williamsburg Journal.
